Coconino County Comprehensive Plan

Coconino County Comprehensive Plan is the mother of all the Plans developed and nurtured by County officials and residents.

Coconino County is big on planning... and that's a good thing... but somehow... in my mind, the top photo has come to represent the planning process.

The Coconino County Community Development Department is responsible for most planning. In addition to the Community Development operation, specialized plans are developed and updated by other departments, including Public Works and Parks & Recreation.

May 3, 2003 -
The Coconino County Community Development Department hosted a meeting May 3, to solicit input from Mountainaire and Kachina Village residents on the update to the .Coconino County Comprehensive Plan.

This was meeting number 14 in the "General review and incorporation of public comments" phase. This phase is an effort to gather comments from citizens on this significant rewrite of the existing plan adopted in 1990.

This series of meetings represents the second round of input from County residents. The first set of comments were gathered as input to the draft plan.

Citizens, interest groups, and State and Federal agencies all have contributed to the draft plan. The current series of meeting are being held in local communities around the County to gather comments on the draft plan before it goes to the Board of Supervisors for adoption.

The plan's major themes include:

  • Distinctive, attractive communities with sense of place
  • Preservation of landscape
  • Preservation of rural character
  • Integrated conservation design and efficient use of land
  • Economic opportunity
  • Conservation of resources
  • Growth in balance with water resources
  • Range of housing opportunities
  • Protection of environmentally sensitive lands
  • Improved public safety
  • Variety of transportation choices and modes
  • Provision of recreation opportunities

You can read more on the Coconino County website. The  current timeline for adoption of the updated plan is:

  • April-June - General review and incorporation of public comments
  • July - Final draft plan presentation to the County Board of Supervisors
  • July-August - Formal 60day public hearing process
  • September - Anticipated plan adoption and commencement of use

The Coconino County Community Development Department and Board of Supervisors welcomes and solicits your input.
